Finding Success in What is Usually Perceived as a Failure.

So often we are so quick to criticize ourselves, especially on the Tennis court where we are usually either striving to improve something, or to win. Following on from last week where we focussed on finding the solution, rather than thinking about the problem, this week we are looking at finding success out of a "failure".

Here are a few examples that I see regularly, of how people are hard on themselves, but should really find a success.

When working on the technique of anything, you mustn't get annoyed if the shots do not go in the court, you're trying to specifically fix a certain part of your stroke, so focus on the success you find within those specific goals. Be it the follow through, the contact point, or anything else. Be pleased with the small successes, and the important ones will be even better and also easier to fix later on.

When serving, I am always quick to praise someone who doesn't hit the toss when it's not accurate, rather than criticize the fact that is wasn't perfect. While the toss is very important to get right, it's also something that takes a lot of work for it to be perfect. A better celebration is simply the (often hard) decision not to try hitting that bad toss!

If you said to yourself, I am going to aim up the middle of the court, but the ball goes long. Be pleased that the direction of your aim was good, and next adjust the aim of the depth. This is a big one I see often in doubles drills!

Continental Grip

Continental Grip

Use this for Volleys, Overheads and Serves!

Continental Grip

We like to call it the "Chopper Grip", like how you hold the knife in the kitchen when you're chopping carrots!

Use this grip for Volleys, Overheads and Serves!

On Volleys you don't have time to switch grips at the net and still have quick hands and be an effective volleyer, this grip stays the same for both forehand and backhand volleys, and also allows you to have a very effective volley on low balls. On top of this there are many negative aspects to having any other grip at the net, including potential injury!

Over heads and serves: Use this grip for many reasons!! It allows you to rotate your wrist and pronate your forearm effectively, it reduces the chance of forearm and wrist injuries and... it's how you get a killer slice!

This grip can be tough to adjust to if you're not used to to, but its really really worth putting the time in to get the hang of it!

How To: Beat The Heat!

Preparing for any kind of physical activity requires good nutrition and hydration at the best of times, but when the heat turns up it's even more important to fuel your body correctly. The last thing you want is to experience heat related problems, it could be as mild as nausea, and headaches or as bad as vomiting and cramps. Extreme dehydration can even land you in the hospital on a drip while you recover!

Do's and Don'ts of your Tennis Practice day!

DO: Have a well balanced meal prior to your Tennis. Waffles or cereal or pop tarts are NOT a good breakfast! If you don't have time for a proper meal, make a smoothie with BANANAS! They are full of goodies to help fuel your body and prevent cramps, throw some protein in your shake, in the powder form, or a little bit of Kale, that stuff is magical and will help speed up your recovery post Tennis too.

DO: Drink lots of water from the moment you wake up, and keep sipping' through the day. The moment you notice you are thirsty you are already dehydrated, the key is to prevent thirst from kicking and to remain as hydrated as possible. Dehydration headaches are only one of the horrible symptoms of not drinking enough WATER!

DON'T: Consume sports recovery drinks in place of water. These products are for the most part either full of Sugar, or Chemical Sugar replacements. They have their place on the Tennis court, but for every sip of one of these drinks take two sips of water, and keep an eye on the labels to avoid high sugar or (in the diet ones) strange chemicals replacing the sugar. If you really want to drink these I highly recommend Kill Cliff, it's full of Vitamins, Ginger, Green Tea, Enzymes, and general goodies to help you through the day, and no strange sweeteners or sugars!

DON"T: Sit inside in the air conditioning all day. Get outside in the shade at least 30 minutes before you start playing and let your body get accustomed to the heat slowly.
